Local public transport

Fixed bus routes, the Penela–Coimbra connection and bookable rural transport—explained before you travel.

Penela is served by SIT Metropolitano, the intermunicipal public-transport network for the Coimbra Region. This guide explains which service to look for, how to read the timetable and what to do when a fixed bus route does not reach your locality.

Scheduled passage times at intermediate stops are indicative. Arrive early and check the current SIT notices before travelling.

For Lines 230 and 303, stop order and codes follow the SIT timetable valid from 1 July 2026, and the trace follows OpenStreetMap roads. Rural stop markers are positioned for orientation because SIT does not publish a public stop-coordinate feed. Temporary diversions and live operations may differ; check the current timetable and notices before travelling.

TRAVEL HELP

Practical answers, one topic at a time.

Open only the information you need. Your place on the page will stay steady.

01How the network is organised

Since August 2025, Penela’s scheduled road services have formed part of SIT Metropolitano, organised across the Coimbra Region. It is the network to use for ordinary bus journeys within the municipality and for regional connections; school transport is a separate municipal service with its own eligibility rules.

The public timetable is organised by municipality, line, direction, day type and operating period. Do not plan from an undated screenshot: open the Penela timetable, check the valid-from date and make sure a newer notice has not replaced it.

02Find the journey that fits

Current SIT material shows regular links between Espinhal, Penela, Condeixa and Coimbra, as well as Line 303 between Penela and Miranda do Corvo. In June 2026, SIT also introduced weekday rapid Line 230, connecting Penela and Coimbra via the A13.

Not every journey serves every village, and some departures operate only during the school term, on school holidays or on specific weekdays. Search by the exact stop and direction, not only by the municipality name.

  • Penela or Espinhal to Coimbra for work, study, appointments and onward connections
  • Line 230 for the rapid weekday Penela–Coimbra route via the A13
  • Line 303 for the Penela–Miranda do Corvo corridor
  • Local stops through places such as Podentes, Lagoa de Podentes and villages on the selected route
03Read the timetable without being caught out

First choose the correct direction. Then check whether the column is marked for annual service, school term, school holidays, a market day or another operating condition. Times shown at intermediate stops are normally indicative, so arrive early and use the stop on the correct side of the road.

Plan the return before leaving. Rural and evening frequencies are limited, Saturday, Sunday and holiday patterns can differ substantially, and a convenient outward bus does not guarantee a matching return. Check the alerts page on the day for roadworks, diversions or a changed Coimbra terminal.

04Tickets, passes and where to buy

SIT publishes separate 2026 information for onboard tickets, pre-purchased fares and passes, including monthly products and national concession schemes such as Sub18+TP, Sub23+TP and Circula PT. The best option depends on the journey distance, age, eligibility and how often you travel.

Penela’s listed local sales agent is Jamarket, Rua de Coimbra 50, 3230-284 Penela. Confirm opening arrangements and the documents required before travelling to obtain or renew a pass. A single ticket can be simpler for an occasional journey; regular passengers should ask SIT which pass covers their origin and destination.

05When no fixed route works: SIT Flexi

SIT Flexi is the Coimbra Region’s bookable public-transport service for places or journeys not adequately served by a regular bus. The Penela information connects participating localities with Penela centre and health facilities, with exceptional journeys elsewhere in the municipality subject to assessment by the reservations team.

Reserve on 800 200 201 by 15:00 on the day before travel. The published reservation desk hours are weekdays from 09:00–12:30 and 14:00–17:30. When booking, confirm the pickup point, outward and return times, fare, mobility needs and whether the requested day is operating; do not treat it as an immediate taxi service.

06Build a return plan for rural travel

A useful plan has four parts: the exact boarding stop, the line and direction, the service code for that day, and a realistic return. Leave enough time for a medical appointment or connection because intermediate stop times are indicative and a disruption can remove a tight interchange.

If the final destination lies beyond the SIT network, check the onward operator separately. For a first journey, save the timetable and the passenger-information number, but recheck the live notice before leaving rather than relying on an old file stored on the phone.

  • Confirm the correct side of the road
  • Arrive before the published time
  • Check the return and the last service
  • Keep a fallback contact for a missed connection
07Access needs, disruptions and feedback

Contact SIT before travelling with a wheelchair, mobility aid, pushchair or other boarding requirement so the operator can confirm what is possible on the intended service and stop. A rural roadside stop may present a different access problem from the vehicle itself.

For a repeated missed stop, unsafe boarding location, inaccurate timetable or service complaint, record the date, line, direction, stop and scheduled time. SIT passenger information is +351 234 108 208; its formal contact route can receive information requests and complaints. Use 112 only for an immediate emergency.
