In summer, the best Penela plans often begin with the search for shade. Above Espinhal, water cuts through the forest in two very different visitor experiences: a walk to a waterfall and an established river-beach day.
Pedra da Ferida: earn the view
Pedra da Ferida Waterfall sits in the Espinhal hills. The initial approach follows the Azenha stream area; the final section is pedestrian, along a forest path with dense vegetation. From Espinhal, the municipality describes a route of about three kilometres to the waterfall.
This is not an urban promenade. Surfaces can be uneven and natural conditions change. Wear suitable shoes, carry water and avoid treating the pool or rock around the fall as a managed swimming facility.
Louçainha: make a day of it
Louçainha is the more structured choice. The natural pools sit in mountain greenery with picnic facilities and a panoramic restaurant. Municipal information highlights accessible provision and a dedicated children’s area, while noting that other parts of the swimming area become significantly deeper.
That combination makes it attractive to families, but natural water always deserves active supervision. Check current bathing-season information and on-site guidance.

Respect the season
Central Portugal’s fire risk can change access and behaviour quickly in hot, dry periods. Before a forest walk, check official civil-protection guidance, do not use fire and never block rural access roads. The best outdoor plan is the one that leaves the landscape ready for the next person.
