The Arnaut archive Story 06
2010—todayA 16,000-volume legacy
A private library became public research infrastructure.

Arnaut assembled about 16,000 volumes across history, archaeology, art, agriculture, geography, medicine, literature and many other fields, with an exceptional collection of Portuguese local monographs. Since 2010, the research centre bearing his name has brought that library together with municipal publications so scholars and the wider community can keep asking new questions about Penela.
A collection built across disciplines
The library reflects the range of Arnaut’s curiosity: history and archaeology sit beside art, geography, agriculture, medicine and literature. Its exceptional local monographs matter because small municipal publications are often difficult to find elsewhere, yet they preserve names, documents and questions essential to understanding a place.
A private legacy opened to new questions
In 2010, the Municipality of Penela, the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Arnaut’s family created the Centro de Estudos de História Local e Regional Salvador Dias Arnaut. It holds his private collection of monographs alongside publications from municipalities across Portugal.
The centre supports research, meetings and public understanding rather than treating the library as a closed memorial.
