Saving Penela’s castles

Research became a public case for preservation.

The real walls and towers of Penela Castle above the town
Penela history, read through place and evidence

As a young student, Arnaut wrote publicly about Penela’s neglected heritage, including appeals to restore its castle and recognise a town he believed was being overlooked. By the 800th anniversary of Penela’s medieval charter in 1937, he was already presenting local history as a way to understand the present and act responsibly towards the future.

01

A monument became a civic question

Arnaut’s earliest heritage writing did more than describe old masonry. It asked what Penela would lose if its castle were allowed to deteriorate and what the town could gain by treating the monument as a shared responsibility. In 1931, while still a teenager, he published an appeal for the castle’s restoration; in 1933 he again argued that Penela’s beauty and history were being overlooked.

An anniversary made the past useful

The 1937 commemoration of eight centuries since Penela’s charter gave Arnaut a larger platform. His historical address ranged across the town’s past, but its purpose was contemporary: careful knowledge could strengthen civic confidence and guide preservation. This was the pattern he kept throughout his life—research the evidence, explain why it matters and connect memory to action.
